The Perfect After-Sun Self-Care Ritual

The Perfect After-Sun Self-Care Ritual

Posted by Cathy Smith on

Summer is here, and sunburns have a way of sneaking up on you. You probably applied sunscreen, and somehow, here you are at the end of a great day outside with shoulders that are definitely more pink than they were this morning.

It happens to the best of us.

When it does, lavender is one of the first things we reach for. People have been turning to lavender for skin care for centuries. It was a staple of traditional European herbal medicine and home remedies long before modern skincare existed. Its reputation for being gentle on reactive, irritated skin is well-earned and well-documented through generations of use.

Easy After-Sun Care Ideas with Lavender

Lavender + Aloe Gel

This is the classic combo for a reason. Aloe cools and hydrates, lavender supports the skin's comfort, and together they feel amazing on a sunburn.

Mix a few drops of lavender essential oil into pure aloe vera gel and apply to affected areas. For bonus points, keep it in the fridge. Cool aloe on a sunburn is one of summer's small mercies.

Lavender Hydrosol Spray

Lavender hydrosol is the floral water left over from distilling lavender essential oil. It's lighter and gentler than the oil, and it's perfect for misting directly onto skin.

Fill a spray bottle, pop it in the fridge, and spritz as needed. It’s simple, refreshing, and great for faces and larger areas where you don't want to rub anything in.

A Cool Lavender Bath

When the sunburn covers a lot of ground, a lukewarm bath with lavender essential oil can bring relief. Just be sure to keep the water cool because hot water can make things worse, not better.

Our Lavender Bath Soak is made for exactly this. Simply add it to a lukewarm bath and soak for 15–20 minutes.

A Lavender Compress

Good for targeted spots like a burned nose, the back of your neck, or anywhere that needs focused attention.

Add a few drops of lavender oil to a bowl of cool water, soak a soft cloth, and apply to the area. Re-soak and reapply as often as you need. Once the skin cools down, our Lavender Calendula Salve is a nice follow-up. Calendula is another botanical with a long history of use on sensitive, irritated skin.

Lavender Body Oil for After

Once the worst of the heat settles down, sunburned skin tends to get dry and tight. A lavender body oil helps replenish moisture and keeps skin comfortable in the days that follow.

Our Lavender Orange Body Oil is great to apply after bathing while the skin is still a little damp for best absorption.

A Couple of Quick Notes

Always dilute lavender essential oil in a carrier oil before applying to skin. The oil is very concentrated and shouldn't be applied to large areas undiluted, especially when the skin is already irritated.

And if your sunburn is severe with blistering, covering a large area, or accompanied by fever or chills, please check in with a healthcare professional. Lavender is great support for everyday sun overexposure, but some burns need more than home care.

Keep Some on Hand This Summer

Lavender fits naturally into summer living. A bottle of hydrosol in the fridge, a little aloe blend in the bathroom, some oil on the nightstand, it's low-effort prep that pays off when you come home a little more sun-kissed than intended.
