November and December have a way of sneaking up on us every year. One minute the lavender fields are full of visitors for U-pick season, and the next, the mornings are cold and crisp as we prune the plants for next summer.
Now, we’re juggling a full calendar with endless to-dos in preparation for the holiday season. And if you have little ones, add class parties, school concerts, and kids running on sugar and excitement. It’s a beautiful, festive season, but it can also leave us running on empty before December even arrives.
The good news is that you can bring calm into your life in small, simple ways at home. A few intentional habits can make the season feel slower, more joyful, and much more like the one you dream of, for you and for the whole family.
Here are a few simple ways we bring a little peace into our home during the winter months.
Let scent set the mood
Scent is one of the quickest ways to shift how a room feels, and lavender’s soothing aroma makes it a great fit for this time of year.
Light a candle while you wrap gifts, tuck a lavender sachet into your linen closet, or use a shower steamer while you wash off the day. Small sensory cues like these tell your mind it's okay to slow down – really! Lavender has been shown to decrease anxiety and cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone.
Scent can be a calming cue for little ones, too. Tuck a sachet near their pillow as part of the bedtime routine, and before long that soft smell will mean it’s time to wind down. Just keep lit candles up high and away from little hands.
Protect your mornings
Before you jump into your to-do list, try to take some time for yourself to enjoy your coffee or tea, stretch, journal, or simply sit in silence and observe the weather outside.
If you have early risers, those fifteen minutes might mean setting your alarm a little before the kids wake, or inviting them into the quiet with their favorite drink and a picture book on the couch before any screens come on. How you start the day often shapes how the rest of it unfolds, and a calm morning is a gift you can give the whole family every day of the season.
Say yes to what matters, and no to the rest
Not every invitation, bake sale, or obligation needs a yes (even if it feels like it does). Look at your calendar and ask what truly fills you up. Then keep those plans and politely let the rest go.
A lighter schedule leaves room for unhurried, more meaningful moments, and days with people you love, without feeling drained. If you have kids, ask them which one or two traditions they love most. The answer is often simpler than you’d expect, like decorating cookies or driving around to see the lights.
Create small, cozy rituals
Rituals turn ordinary evenings into something you look forward to. A few ideas to try:
-
A Sunday-night bath with calming soaks and a good book
-
Baking a family recipe with a pinch of culinary lavender
-
Using a wax melt warmer when you’re home
-
Screen-free time after dinner for puzzles or crafts
-
A family reading night with blankets and a stack of holiday books
The magic is in allowing yourself permission to pause and enjoy the moments.
Give thoughtfully
Holiday shopping can feel like the most stressful part of the season. Start early, keep your list simple, and choose gifts that help people relax and feel cared for.
Handmade, small-batch gifts carry a little extra meaning because you know where they came from and who made them. Ready-made gift sets and gift cards are also a lovely way to cross several names off your list without the last-minute scramble.
And don’t forget the teachers, coaches, bus drivers, and babysitters who show up for your family all year. A small lavender gift makes an easy, heartfelt thank-you, especially with a card your kids wrote themselves.

Make room for real rest
Rest isn't a reward for finishing everything or being productive. It's what helps you show up for the people and traditions you care about in the first place.
Try to go to bed a little earlier, turn off notifications at night, and spray some linen mist on your pillow to settle in for the night.
Bring a little calm home
The holidays will always be busy, but they can also be beautiful. Embrace the slow and full of the moments that matter most.
